Other than Ionesco'splays, what are some other good theatre of the absurd works?

I recently Stage-managed a performance of Ionesco' Rhinoceros, and watched a performance of The Bald Soprano, and really enjoyed them. Thus, sparking my interest in theatre of the absurd.

Other than Ionesco'splays, what are some other good theatre of the absurd works?comedy show

Samuel Beckett (his "Waiting for Godot" is probably the most famous play to date), Jean Genet, Arthur Adamov, and Harold Pinter, although these writers were not always comfortable with the label and sometimes preferred to use terms such as "Anti-Theater" or "New Theater". Other playwrights associated with this type of theater include Tom Stoppard, Arthur Kopit, Friedrich D眉rrenmatt, Fernando Arrabal, Edward Albee, N.F. Simpson, Boris Vian, Peter Weiss, Vaclav Havel, and Jean Tardieu. The French philosopher Albert Camus defines the human condition in his 1942 essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, as basically meaningless. Camus argued that humanity had to resign itself to recognizing that a fully satisfying rational explanation of the universe was beyond its reach; in that sense, the world must ultimately be seen as absurd.

I would add Christopher Durang to those. "Actor's Nightmare"

I am in university and picked television acting and theatre acting, as I wanted to learn all aspects

do you think that I made the right move by doing this?I dont want to get the two mixed up when I finish university and have this stoop me from getting a job, I just wanted to be good at the different forms of acting, so I picked these two as options in my 2nd year!I mean you get some Hollywood actors who go back to Theatre acting for a while, dont you?

I am in university and picked television acting and theatre acting, as I wanted to learn all aspects of actingevents

When you get out of university and are looking for professional work, your first priority will be to get an agent. You might find that this is easier with a drama school qualification, rather than just a degree - it depends if you have a showcase at the end of the course which agents attend. But all training is good, whether it is theater, film or telelvision, the more training you have, the better.

After that, I assure you, you will do anything that pays. It is only actors with massive success who have the luxury of choosing between theatre, TV and film. For everyone else, its whatever you can get.

I am in university and picked television acting and theatre acting, as I wanted to learn all aspects of actinghome theatre opera theater

its a good idea, both are very different, yes some actors do tread the broads, good luck, and keep going.
Acting isn't about what you can learn at University. You become an actor because you have to; something inside won't let you do anything else. If you don't have that passion, then all the knocks and disappointments will soon make you change your ambition.

What you'll learn will make you very useful in the entertainment industry, but it won't make you a good (let alone a great) actor.
You will quickly find out the difference. Any training is good. If you really have talent perhaps you could apply to a drama school after your degree or if REALLY good you can start going to auditions. Aim high, work your socks off, Do any sort of acting you can get. The advice above is good from Mrs C

I need some advice about a 6.1 Home Theatre System?

I recently won a 6.1 Home Theatre System that came with a 5.1 AV Receiver. I have been told that it will still work, just don't use the extra speaker. As the prize was advertised as a Top of the Range 6.1 HTS I don't feel I have received what was advertised. I am on selling it as it is not suitable for my needs and in fact, I did think I was winning a TV and DVD player. So, to date, no luck in selling as it is not the complete package, if you know what I mean. I am not technically brilliant tho I am quickly learning. The place that supplied me the prize just offered me a deal of buying another receiver at a reduced price leaving me with 2 of them and I will omit my comment back to them. I am starting to feel a tad ungrateful seeing as it was a prize tho it is done all the time. Would any of you technically brilliant people out there give me some advice please. Thanks, Suzanne.,

I need some advice about a 6.1 Home Theatre System?getting late

While the prize doesn't meet your expectations it is still a useful item and has value.

BTW, 5.1 is a perfectly functional system seeing as how there is relatively little 6.1 audio material. In reality it is reasonable to just not use one of the speakers. I suggest that once you have a TV and DVD player you might value the HT system higher since the "6.1 sound system" complements the DVD/TV well -- giving you a full "home theater system".

But if you really don't want the sound system several options come to mind.

The first, and probably the better option is to simply accept the prize. You can sell it even though the speakers are 6.1 and the receiver is 5.1 ... just sell separately (or sell as a 5.1 system with a bonus speaker).

As a variation, have you inquired about getting credit for the receiver and speakers toward a TV and DVD player? If new/unused this should be possible. You can't expect full value maybe, but maybe enough to make purchase of the TV a relatively inexpensive transaction.

Or consider legal action. If you have in writing that the prize was a "top of the line 6.1 HTS" you could consult a lawyer re whether the company falsely advertized the prize. However, note that there is alway room to interpret, and depending on wording a lawyer may advise you have little chance of success. For example, while the receiver is not 6.1 the speakers are, so it could be argued this is a 6.1 system since you have 6 speakers and a subwoofer.

I don't know what country you are in so details differ, but given the relatively low total value you may need to pursue this in small claims court (From experience I would caution that this can be a frustrating and potentially useless exercise). However, there may be allowance in your legal system (There is in my jurisdiction) for a brief free consultation with a lawyer to at least get an opinion on the merits of your case.

Hope there is something useful to you here. Try to take a positive view on this. At worst you are a winner, even if the prize is other than what you expected.

They gave you a set of 7 (L, R, C, SR, SL, CR, Sub) speakers and a receiver that only supports 6 (L, C, R, Sr, Sl, and sub)?

Hook it up and enjoy it, what is your problem?

Put it on Ebay for a penny, both parts, it will sell.

I use the website www.screenit.com a LOT! It's designed for parents to check out content and suitability for kids, but I use it for my own decisions. They tell you everything about the movie that might be objectionable, as far as sex, violence, language, bad behaviors that might be imitated by kids, stuff like that. They also warn you if there are things about the movie that might be physically unsuitable, such as strobe lights or shaky camera angles. They have sections for new movies/DVD's as well as stuff that's been out a while. Hope this helps!

Help me decide my Audition Piece for Broadway Musical Theatre!!!?

Hi!

Two weeks from now, I'll be heading up to NYC for another stint of auditions for Broadway Musical Theatre.

I have A LOT on my plate right now, and would like some suggestions on pieces to perform for 16-bars.

I have a wide range, but am most comfortable as a mezzo soprano (having performed as Eponine, Fontine, Marguerite St. Just, Elphiba, Lucy, Maria Von Trapp and others).

I refuse to do anything from Les Mis (although I LOVE it), Wicked, or Phantom.

I was thinking the following:

"A New Life"- Jekyll and Hyde

"Hold On"- The Secret Garden"

"I'll Forget You"- The Scarlet Pimpernel

if you have other suggestions, please note them. You also might get a better idea of how I sound from a clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmShBKTp4...

I have heard that overseas black-American Actors are received quite well, and have great opportunities for work in the United Kingdom (which is where I am considering moving upon college graduation.) I have also heard that they aren't considered any more than the black-Americans that live in America. I just wanted to know if anyone had any insight...

Also, I am really into experimental theatre...i wanted to know how innovative it is in the UK...

How do I get a job at a professional theatre (after college)?

I am majoring in theatre arts studies, with emphisies in acting and stage managing. I like stage managing, and I think it would be easier to find a job as a stage manager, but my deepest passion is acting and don't want to get stuck in a position that will block all acting opportunities.

Your college should provide your with information about this, but many theatre offer fellowship programs for beginning actors and as a way to become an EMC.

Check out the various Shakespeare festivals around the country ( I know many people who started out at these and became Equity that way), also make rounds of the big conference auditions, like SETC and UPTA. This website has a list of a lot of these combined auditions - http://www.redbirdstudio.com/AWOL/combau...

OK, mostly, I was kidding. but not entirely. You either work a night job that allows you to eat and go to casting calls durig the day, or you get a real job, and hope to get found. Seems like stage manager would put you in "the world", at least to a degree.

How do you connect a turntable through a home theatre system with no grounding pin?

I have a Technics direct drive turntable and a Sony 5.1 home theatre in a box setup.

How do you connect a turntable through a home theatre system with no grounding pin?binoculars

My guess is that you do not have a turntable input. That is how most receivers are these days (which is a very stupid omission on the part of the manufacturers). If that is the case with yours, our going to have to buy separate a turntable preamp to go between the turntable and one of the inputs on the receiver. Phono inputs included on receivers are SPECIFICALLY AND ONLY designed for turntable use, nothing else. Failure to do so will result in almost no sound from the turntable and LOTS of hum and other noise. Your best bet is to go to a store that specializes in DJ sound equipment to get the separate pre amp. I had to do the very same thing because my receiver has no phono input. Most of these separate preamps, like the one I bought, will take care of ALL the hook up issues ;sound boosting, grounding, etc. Any decent DJ salesman at the store should be able to answer most of your questions.

How do you connect a turntable through a home theatre system with no grounding pin?violin opera theater

Just find a good ground to attach the turntable ground wire to. A screw that attaches to metal chassis on one of your other components is a likely choice.
Most people don't need a phono input but you will.

Here you go.

http://www.turntableneedles.com/index.as...
Find a small device called pre-amp at any electronic store. It costs you around $35 - 40.I have seen one made by a brand called Recoton.

That is the right way to do it.Otherwise, buy a new receiver that has phono input.
just nip off that third prong
You don't have a mixer????

I've hooked my turntables up to a home theatre system, but I used my mixer.

You can try to hook the RCA cords to the system. Just match up the red and white wires to the corresponding colors on the home theatre system. You'll have an extra spot for the video output. Just leave that open. Good luck... hope this helps.
you cannot
There should be at least a connection marked for phono, some receivers have them others do not.

If yours does not then you can go to Radio Shack and buy an adapter or pre-amp for turntables , and you would connect this to your turntable then to your receiver, and all should be fine.

Sorry mate only two ways in - paid for training or un-paid work in local theatre.

However the good news is that if you are any good sound techies are quiet saught after. Once you get to know directors/Stage Managers they will pass your name on and you will work your way up through profit-sharing shows (they make money, you get paid) and eventually paid work. But its all about time, especially if you can't go to college.
I know you said you can't fund college, but what about a loan?

Because North Carolina School of the Arts has a major of Sound Design in Theatre. It's probably the best, so that would be your best bet.

there is a huge difference of performance but if u want a powerful system, home theatre is ur choice boy. Buy a good 5.1 or 7.1 home theatre system and it should rock for sure.

What is the difference between "Multimedia speakers" and "Home theatre system" ? which is best for PC ?concert tickets opera theater

simply a combination of multimedia speakers make Home theatre system .If you can afford home theatre wud go perfect with a PC
There's a thin line, between the two. In the ealy days, computer speakers with 2 speakers were normal. Nowadays, you can buy 5.1 systems, like the ones you do for your home audio entertainment system.

The only difference between the two, are the connections. They are almost all interconnectable, with the help of some converters, so...

Just go to your local store, and check some speaker sets out.
Multimedia speakers are just ordinary speakers. They are generally 2 small speakers with a nifty bass. A home theater system consists of more than 2 speakers (usually 5-6 small satellite-like speakers)

Both units are suitable to your system. However, if you want to have an ear-ringing sound system, you may opt for a home theater system. However, the price of a home theater system is significantly higher than that of multimedia speakers.
Basically, the difference is the price. If you don't have much money to spend, then go for multimedia speakers. (they're the most common speakers for PC today)

If money is not a problem then go for a home theater system. (the speakers are bigger and it has usually a separate receiver/amplifier). If you want the clearest and most powerful setup then home theater system is the way to go.
multimedia system has two external speakers and home theatre has internal speakers built for close rooms
i use Home theatre system on my pc its very clear and good try that

There is no 'one click' solution. You browse the MySpace theater section. Read peoples blogs. When you see a profile of someone that you'd like to network with, IM them and send a friend request...not all will be accepted, but some will, so this builds your friends list. Send bulletins about what you are doing, learning, or need to know. Some people will respond. If you find any good theater blogs, subscribe to them and leave comments.

You should blog regularly too. Do all this every day or a few times a week. Check the MySpace film-makers forum and participate in the chat, too. After a while you will have a nice network of theater friends.

What's the best way to network with MySpace - theatre?performing art center opera theater

There used to be a "Theatre" networking category which you could include on your profile. I think it may have been discontinued, as I have tried to find it since.

The next best solution is to include something like the following under your "networking" category: Film-Visual Effects-Art Direction. Then go to your profile, click one of those words, and you should be able to narrow the field more by area, age, etc.

You can also search the MySpace groups for people with similar interests.

You can probably talk about a variety of ethnicity and their stereotypes being used as a humor or even a definite thing on theatre. By theatre, I'm assuming you mean movies as a type of media. For example, based on the stereotypes, Asian culture symbolizes martial art, yakuzas and animated characteristics. African American culture may symbolize the gangsters and the ghetto or Hispanic culture may also symbolize gangsters and drug dealers. Even though we learn at schools not to stereotype about other groups, it's surprising how much stereotypes there are in the movies. Either many movie producers aren't educated enough or those stereotypes are just what people want to see pleasuring from holding onto our ignorance. For some reason people appreciate these stereotypical superficial images of the ethnic groups in America on screen and there should be a lot of reasons explaining why. Perhaps, people fear; perhaps people are indifferent about finding out the real human qualities from people in those groups. And this vicious circle of images portrayed on media keeps on affecting people cognitively, behaviorally and attitudinally. Well, did I talk about things that are too obvious? lol Just my thoughts from being a Communications major in college years ago. Good luck.
You could write about how Native American storytelling is reflected in cowboy poetry readings, spaghetti westerns, or modern American theatre in general if that better fits your assignment. One possible discussion is how Native American symbolism is used in set design to demonstrate desert or Southwest geography. Hope I helped. Good luck with your assignment.
What about the first African American cast of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" now on broadway. It is very interesting for a Tennessee Williams "deep south" sort of show. You could focus on minorities in traditionally "white" roles.

Depends on how long have you known each other and how well do you know each other. But my guess tells me if you aren't involved and he is trying to get you to go out with him or do "things" with him then he would throw it out there just to get you to
He's acting.
Is he fighting his own homosexuality? Coming Out Day isn't until August, I think....
some men...really have the nerve...kissing your hand....dirty scoundrel
if you really wanna know..ask him! and observe his behaviour..is he like that to other girls or just you? the way he looks at you and behaves around you..you can pick up little hints here and there if you're observant enough..
Words lie. Acton always speaks louder.

What are good places to act in a professional theatre?

In NYC, where are the best places to act proffesionally, but just regular plays, not musicals. (Hypathetically) If I were to want to make a living out of acting in theatre, where would be the best place to do so?

What are good places to act in a professional theatre?performing arts show

Unfortunately, very few people are full-time professional actors, particularly in theater. Most of them, unless they are in the highly successful Broadway shows, do it for the love of theater and the art. Even some of the best stage actors may only make $40 or $50 per show.

If you mean attending a show at a large professional theatre, as an actor the advantage is seeing a highly professional show done well. You can learn a lot from the actors' performances, especially if you've read the play ahead of time. Technically the show also has enough money to use effects to their best advantage.
It's rather minor one.
I hope you mean cinema theatres where they show films that will make your head reel and ache?In that case I suggest you choose a big theatre where you have A/C and carpeted flooring, cushioned big seats.

Also good canteens. The place is meant for sleeping so try to get good sleep. The canteens are for good eating during intervel Me and my children enjoy such places.

In between if a scene or two are good enjoy them as they are certainly copied from a foreign film. The crazy dresses and the loud mouthed songs are sold in the name of culture.I simply cannot understand why music should be so loud and the actors make ugly faces to scare you out of the theatre.Any music should be melodious and pleasent to the ears.Children should sleep

Can I do a degree in Sociology/Women Studies and minor in Musical Theatre? Does anyone know any coll

I actually did first year of a BA(hons) musical theatre and then quit to do a degree in sociology. I still love performing though and I really miss it, so I'm wondering if there's a way I can still do a minor in Musical Theatre. I shouldn't have quit, I really regret it now...

Can I do a degree in Sociology/Women Studies and minor in Musical Theatre? Does anyone know any colleges?theater

What sorts of majors and minors you can pursue will depend entirely on what's offered at your college and on their policies. I can see no reason why you can't do both; sociology as a major wouldn't prevent you from rehearsing 'til late at night :-)

Here's a thought--it looks to me like you're choosing majors. Do you have an idea about an eventual career? You might want to hunt down the career planning services on your campus and have them do a quick check of your career plans, maybe sociology-women's studies isn't the best preparation for what you really want to do in life.

In any event, there's no reason you can't continue to pursue musical theatre as a hobby for your entire life. Most communities have amateur theatre groups where you can escape from your day job into the worlds of La Mancha and Camelot and Saigon.

How do you say "Plays were performed in this theatre" in Latin?

How do you say "Plays were performed in this theatre." in Latin?

What tense would that be? Is there another way to say it in the perfect tense?

Thanks alot!

How do you say "Plays were performed in this theatre" in Latin?the grand theater

"Fabulae in hoc theatro factae sunt"

"fabulae" is translating "plays" with meaning of theatrical works.

Tens to be used is the Indicative perfect of the passive form.

As alternative (with the meaning "plays have been performed in this theatre) you could use the Indicative pluperfect still in the passive form and then sentence would be

"Fabulae in hoc theatro factae erant"

Edit #1 - ref.below answer I reconfirm my choice of the verb

"facere" instead of "agere"

As per this very popular on line dictionary

http://catholic.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/...

the verb perform translates into Latin with different verbs, included my option "facio, facere" while I can't see the below suggested "ago, agere": I've made a reverse research and ago is not translating "to perform"

http://catholic.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/...

I know the Latin saying "Acta est fabula, plaudite!" but its meaning is " The play is over, applaud!" (and not " The play was performed, applaud !").

How do you say "Plays were performed in this theatre" in Latin?soap opera opera theaterInformative perhaps - but wrong. That translation is incorrect. It means something like 'plays were built in this theatre'. The only verb to use with plays/performances etc. is ago, agere, egi, actus. As one answer pointed out, where do you think the word actor came from? Report It

Los juegos fueron realizados en este teatro
Fabulae in hoc theatro actae sunt.

Would agree with above except for choice of verb -

'To perform a play' was 'agere fabulam', so verb would be a tense of agere, in this case 3rd plural, perfect tense, passive voice.

ADDED: The root of the English word 'actor' is the Latin 'actus' the same root as 'actae' in the translation. It means 'one who performed in plays.' And, of course, the literal translation of 'Acta fabula est, plaudite' really is 'The play was performed; applaud.' The bit about 'The play is over' was just to put it in colloquial English.
Ludi (scaenici) facti sunt in hoc theatro.

P.s. I don't know what you exactly mean "Plays" ... I intended them as performances.

If you need translation into Latin

If you keep the Zune's volume to a reasonable level, no. Turning up the volume on the player will consume more battery.

But instead, just keep it at a medium level, and then amplify the volume with your sound system.

Oops! I ate a hot dog at the movie theatre and I'm 16 weeks pregnant?

and I remebered afterwards that was on the list of "what foods to avoid during pregnancy" that I found on a pregnancy website. it was from a popular movie theatre, and just now when I hiccuped a whole chcunk of it came out of my mouth, gross I know, it looked whole and I ate it over 2 hours ago like it didnt digest or somewthing, ew! is this okay to do once in awhile during pregnancy or is it one of those "never" foods and why? I have eaten one hotdog before during pregnancy but that was before I knew.

Here's some info on it from the American Pregnancy Association:

Oops! I ate a hot dog at the movie theatre and I'm 16 weeks pregnant?met opera opera theater

Just one won't hurt anything.
Don't worry about it. If it was cooked it's no big deal, if it's not cooked then you can get listeria.

It might have come up because of acid reflux, which tends ot happen more during pregnancy...
i've at plenty of hot dogs since i've been pregnant. all those "what to avoid" foods are really "don't have everyday" foods. don't worry about it your fine. honestly i could go for a hot dog right about now.
I'm 40 weeks and 5 days, I eat cheesedogs and hot dogs alot, I did earlier when I was pregnant too. Your aloud to eat them, as long as they are cooked, just cant eat them out of the package. Goes for all lunch meats and such. They have to be cooked, cant have anything raw!
I had a friend who only ate hot dogs during her pregnancy, but I cant confirm that its good or bad, only that both of her kids came out okay. If you are worried, call your doctor.
Why not carry some fruits with you ? BTW, what movie did you watch? It will influence more than what you consume in the cinema.
Don't worry! There is a very low chance of anything happening with hot dogs anyhow and the risk is higher in early pregnancy to the fetus. I'm sure you will be ok just don't eat too much of it.
I don't understand some of the things coming about these days... My mom LIVED on hotdogs and deli meat when pregnant with us kids... She also smoke, drank lots of coffee, and probably took aspirin...I'm not condoning these things...It just seems as though that "What not to do's" Have gotten a lot more ridiculous in the last 25yrs.

Note: I'm sure there is some medical proof that bad things can happen...But hey...Don't stress over a hotdog!
dont worry about!
You'll be fine and so will the baby.
I think all that stuff is crap, in between me having three children it changed all the time, you weren't allowed to eat this or that - but jeez, our mums and grandmothers all ate processed meat during pregnancy and most of us were fine hey!!! I know I ate peanuts, ham, salami and all that and nothing happened to my kids (that i know of.....thay are 9, 6 and almost 3)
yeah i think that who episode was just a coincidence, as long as you dont make it a habit your baby will be fine, no worries
I believe it is a food that you should avoid as it is 'processed' meat and has a higher risk of having bacteria that may cause pregnant women problems. Just try to avoid it from now on, but don't stress out about this time!! :)
I ate hotdogs all of the time with my first pregnancy and same with this one. The key is to cook it really well. But you should be doing that with any meat that you have during pregnancy. I'm sure your baby will be just fine!
I am 28 and very healthy and my mom ate a hotdog a day for the last 2 months of her pregnancy :)
It's not one of those things that will harm you right away. If you keep eating them it could be a problem but I'm sure you'll be fine. I don't think spitting it back up had anything to do with it being bad for you. Just a bit of a digestive problem with the pregnancy.
One hotdog once in a while is fine...ask your doctor about it the next time you see him...

However watch your sodium intake and don't go overboard. I had a friend who ate hotdogs every day while pregnant and stated she could not stop eating them...she died of toxemia at the end of her pregnancy. I don't think that will happen to everyone who eats hotdogs, but after that I never ate a hotdog when I was pregnant. While I think my friend would have been fine if she cut back, it was because she ate too many of them.
lolz! you worry bout a hot dog i would eat chips, dipped in chocolate, with ice cream when i was pregnant! nothing wrong with eating things like that! just make sure you chew it right!
Don't worry about it. You're baby won't be harmed by one hot dog. Do watch what you eat. Processed meats are loaded with chemicals and preservatives, and can be harmful if consumed in quantity.
you can have any cold cuts as long as they have been heated up to steaming!

The Nederlander is just west of 7th Avenue, on 41st Street.

The thing about New York is that it's friendly to the directionally challenged. If you know your numbers, you're pretty good to go.

So, when you get out of Penn Station, you'll be between 7th and 8th Avenues, between 31st and 33rd Streets. The first thing to do is find 7th Avenue and get to it. Don't cross 7th Avenue, just get there. Once you're there, turn left and walk up 7th Avenue (make sure street numbers are increasing as you go, you'll know within one minute; look at the street signs).

Keep going until you get to 41st Street. Don't cross, just turn left when you get there. The Theatre will be on your left.

Hope this answers your question!

What were the different cultural concerns in Ancient Greek Theatre?

I am doing a project for my Theatre Appreciation class. And I have to do a 9 slide presentation on a specific play of the time and how it specifically addressed a cultural concern of that period.

What were the different cultural concerns in Ancient Greek Theatre?

I would address how the Greeks believed that people learned by example. No Greek plays actually have killing, suicide or other violence on stage, the events always occur offstage. This is because Greeks believed that if a person saw the event happening, they would learn how to do it and be more inclined to commit the act. A good example of this is how in Oedipus Tyrannus (the Greek version), Oedipus gouges out his eyes offstage. Another example from the same play is how Iocaste kills herself offstage and then is rolled out on an Ekkyklema so that the audience can see that she is dead.

What were the different cultural concerns in Ancient Greek Theatre?opera mobile opera theater

There is a trilogy by Sopocles; Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone (an-tig-o-nee). If you've taken psychology and ever studied Sigmunk Freud, I'm sure you've heard of the Oedipal complex.

Cultural Topics Addressed: The importance of burying the dead, incest and sexuality, other themes I can't seem to recall.

Try searching: "Three Theban Plays"...you can focus on one or overview them all.

What do you need to get a career in Theatre?

I am only a Sophomore in High School but I'm thinking a lot of my college and future plans. One of my dreams is to become a dancer or actress on Broadway or something of the sort. I have been dancing for 11 years (13 by the time I graduate) and by the time I finish High School I will have four years of Drama clubs and classes and 7 school plays under my belt (small school, not much annual Productions).

However, since College is a lot of money, I don't want to study something that possibly won't get me anywhere. So I was wondering if it is almost essential to Major in Theatre or Dance in college to be in the spotlight, or at least somewhere on stage for something like Broadway. Any help at all would be great, advice would be very helpful.

What do you need to get a career in Theatre?opera music

Theatre is a collective endeavor requiring

individual achievement. A single production

may, for example, bring together the skills of

playwrights, performers, designers, and

experts in scene construction and lighting.

Theatre may be the most comprehensive of all

the arts, and the most challenging and

exciting.

While it is true that having a college degree

will not guarantee you a position in the world

of theatre (or any other field for that matter), it

is important to realize that this is the best way

to prepare yourself and to increase your

chances in the job market. Acknowledging

that there is intense competition, given the

incredible number of talented people vying for

each job, you must somehow set yourself

above the others.

A great combination is a college degree with

at least one theatre-related internship,

additional formal training or study, experience

working in the field (such as working crew on a

production, volunteering, teaching drama at a

local arts center, etc.), enthusiasm along with

a positive attitude, and perseverance.

A student concentrating in theatre arts should

emerge from the experience more

knowledgeable, confident, sensitive, and

aware of the benefits of cooperating and

sharing with others. Study in the theatre arts

offers exposure to creative dramatic

expression, primarily in front of live audiences.

It involves study of all types of artistic

performance in theaters, in educational

institutions, on TV, in movies, and outdoors.

All major aspects of performance preparation

are studied. Major areas of specialization

include: acting, directing, theatre history and

criticism, playwriting, design, theatre

technology, theatre studies (education), and

creative drama.

While many theatre majors proceed to careers

in the theatre and associated fields, their study

may also lead them to success in such fields

as teaching, arts management, public

relations, and drama therapy, to name a few.

What do you need to get a career in Theatre?opera sheet music opera theater

The first answerer provided some useful information. However, if you're aiming for a performance career, internships are of no use -- you would never put something like that on an acting resume. All an auditor wants to see from your resume is an idea of the level of professional work you've done.

I strongly recommend a college education. Upon graduating with a degree, if the performance thing doesn't pan out, you will be equipped to teach or work in some sort of arts administraion or arts management jobs, of which there are quite a few. After over 20 years of creative work [mostly onstage], I've been trying to transition into the administrative side of the arts. However, it's proving very difficult, because I never finished a degree in anything -- even though I've got arts experience up the wazoo AND have worked in a lot of administrative environs during periods where I had no arts work, employers are not willing to equate my practical experience with a piece of paper [a degree], even though I know more now than someone stepping out of college with their degree [my private studies with renowned teachers also outweigh what a college student would have experienced, but even that is not given credence].

I dropped out of college because I started getting cast in professional theatre -- frankly, I needed the money. In retrospect I could have managed to stay in school, but there you are. So I recommend you go to college -- the degree will make you marketable in one way or another.

Besides speakers you need an electrical device to process the surround sound, usually a receiver. It not only processes the sound but amplifies it. Make sure it says Dolby Digital on it .

Any Ideas on a Projector for a Cheap Home Theatre Setup?

I am wanting to set-up a home theatre projector at my house. Its primary purpose will be for watching DVDs and playing video games (i.e. Nintendo, XBox, etc.). I am not concerned with HDTV. The projector will need to sit between 15-23 feet from the screen. Additionally, I need the projector to be bright enough so that a little ambient light won't make it unviewable.

I was hoping to get a brand name, or reputable projector of some form, however I was hoping to not spend over $800 on the projector itself. This projector WILL NOT be my primary TV, it will ONLY be used when I want to watch a DVD or play a video game.

I was looking at the ViewSonic PJ556D, it looks like its designed for office presentations but I didnt know if there is any reason why I couldn't use it for my purpose? (I read somewhere that office-projectors migh not have the right color-wheel?)

The difference between HOME THEATER and MEDIA projectors is the VIDEO PROCESSING...A media projector is for hooking up a COMPUTER or even an HD source...And these look GREAT...But if you show ANYTHING with less picture quality, the image will suffer.

But a Home Theater projector has a built-in SCALER (video processor)...This takes ANY video source and "up-converts" it to a quality closer to a Hi-Def signal...The "Farujua DCDi" chip is one of the very BEST processors included in projectors.

But if you want to use a projector with "ambient" light, then you're going to spend some money...You can save HUNDREDS of dollars just by "blacking out" your living room...We hung a dark curtain over our window and went with this model...Looks great...Click right here: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/InFocus-S...

And I know the folks will tell you that with those specs you won't get "TRUE" hi-def...But I'm telling you, that even with that resolution, we can tell the difference between DVD and HD (even the difference in "720p" and "1080i" signals).

I used to sell $20,000 Runco projectors and after checking the specs on the Infocus, I was sure it would suck...But you have to see it to believe it...It offers a truly amazing picture for the price...We love ours...But try it for yourself.

Any Ideas on a Projector for a Cheap Home Theatre Setup?home theater opera theater

Buy a home theater projector for home theater applications because of several reasons:

1) Better colors

2) Better image quality

3) All appropriate video connections

If you get an office projector for a home theater, you will get inaccurate colors, lower quality video processor and you may only get composite, s-video and VGA connections. You want a projector that is capable of supporting DVI, HDMI and component which are the highest quality capables for video.

Don't get an LCD projector for home theater. You get ghosting, pixelation and poor color production. DLP is the way to go.

Dell, Epson, Viewsonic are all great brands. Just don't get an InFocus because they are going bankrupt and closing their doors within the next few months.
DLP is definitely the answer. Epson makes a decent one that would do the trick, but the ambient light thing could be a big issue. For the budget you are talking about, be very aware of the lumens. At the throw distance you are talking about with light in the room it will be very hard to see a picture well enough to enjoy it if you go basic bargain. Epson is okay, but Sharp is good. I would try looking for a floor model that is on clearance. You are going to have to replace the bulb anyway at some point, so who cares if it's a year from now or three years from now. Another thing to consider is the screen. They have a big impact on how well the image is seen in lighter conditions as well. The best thing to do is go to an electronics store and talk to a smart salesperson. They might not now the specifics of each model, but the smart ones will know where to look right away and make you feel comfortable. Good luck.
Check out cnet shopper. There are a lot of DLPprojectors in your price range.Good luck

What do I need to do to join a theatre touring company?

I would like to join a troupe that tours (more specifically a musical theatre troupe) Does anyone have any suggestions or ways to help me out?

What do I need to do to join a theatre touring company?opera singer

They probably require an audition so practice a song about 1 minute long that you are really good at. Also they might want you to give a monologue. Smile and have fun. Show you have nothing to lose and just want to have fun. Practice really hard and show great personality.

What do I need to do to join a theatre touring company?amc theater opera theater

It depends on your location. In the Uk you would need musical theatre training at an NCDT accredited drama school and enough previous work in TIE or theatre to have earned the actors union membership (equity) before you could secure an agent to get you an audition for a musical theatre tour. Some less reputable companies may take you on for low budget tours with less than this but you can expect a wage of only about 锟?0 per day for your troubles.

definitely the dress circle is better - the upper circle is so up in the sky at the Aldwych you don't feel; part of the show.

as above
aldwych is a horrible theatre

all i can say is if you are sitting at the bottom sit in the front 4 rows or you are in trouble, the upper level over hangs and blocks the view for the top seats.

Id sit in the upper seating if i went again.

This is Singapore, right? I'm thinking about the fact that Asian women take traditional values and fashion more seriously...so why not step it up a notch? Check some online retailers of hosiery, and get yourself a pair of vintage style backseamed stockings or pantyhose. Wear those with a classy dress that has a slit up the back or side, so the sexy yet classy hose show just enough when you walk.
i dont know
well you just have to feel comfortable... no need to act class... a normal jeans and t shirt should be fine.

just dress up as though u are watching a movie. i even seen ppl wearing sports shoes and running short and singlet in. though they are not supposed.

some singaporeans always wanna act class and overdress as though it's their wedding.... please PLEASE DUN DO IT!!! it's over..... the attention is on the dancers, and i am sure u dun wan it to be on you.

Whats is the BEST SOUNDING for the Cost, Home Theatre System?

I am looking around for a home theatre system, and have found 2 that I like at Wal-Mart, But I am still looking around for the best at a lower cost.. maby $200 or less for 5.1 or better system.

Whats is the BEST SOUNDING for the Cost, Home Theatre System?opera.com

I am with Pontgranprix. Go to Best Buy and listen to some quality systems. The Pioneer system for $120 is worth about $120. The THD (total harmonic distortion, a measure of how clean the sound is) is 10%! Good systems will rate at 0.05%. The bass only goes down to 45Hz, more than an octave above the limits of hearing. Good bass should take you down to 25Hz. In general you get what you pay for.

Whats is the BEST SOUNDING for the Cost, Home Theatre System?amc theatre opera theater

The best sounding is the one U listen 2 and then make the determination.
You are obviously not looking for a good sounding system if you are only willing to spend 200$ on an amp + 5.1 speaker setup.

Try looking for a panasonic, JVC, Samsung HTiB (home-theater-in-a-box) systems. If you're lucky you might find something for 200$-300$. My guess is you might find systems by companies who make light bulbs for a living like Sylvana or something like that.....those cheap no-name brands are easy on the wallet but not on the ears.

Try checking out Ebay and you might find a decent system there.

Good luck.
You won't get much of a system for $200. You would be better off waiting until you can afford a better quality system. I would a to Best Buy and listen to some of their stuff before you buy at walmart.

I actually found this for only 100 bucks. It's not top of the line, but it sounds very very good for the price.

It has good highs and lows.

It says its for Xbox, but you can actually use it with anything.

I am having trouble hooking up my RCA home theatre system. Not getting a picture - only sound on the

RCA RTD206 Home theatre system. Has two audio in hookups, three video out component hookups (three plugins) and then one separate video hookup (yellow). The TV has two audio out hookups, then three input hookups and three DVD in hookups. I have an additional VCR that is hooked up in all of this. Cable runs into it, then into the TV. Nothing else is hooked up to it. So, I can put a DVD in that machine and it will play through the surround sound speakers, but when I put the DVD in the RCA system, I get sound but am not getting the picture. Can'tigure out what I have done wrong. Figured I would try this first before I call somebody in to help my technophobe self. Thanks for any help!

I am having trouble hooking up my RCA home theatre system. Not getting a picture - only sound on the TV.?opera sheet music

Call your cable company and order digital cable. They will send a tech out to hook it up--while he is there he will have to hook up the surround sound too.

I am having trouble hooking up my RCA home theatre system. Not getting a picture - only sound on the TV.?shows opera theater

Ok lets try a couple of things.

First off, if I understand your set up, you have a VCR (which is also being used as a cable box?) and the RCA DVD player hooked up to the TV through two separate inputs on the back of the TV. If this is so, you may have to change the TV's video input (they're probably called video-1, video-2, etc) depending on which of the two you are using.

So for example, if you have the VCR hook up to the video 1 input , you need to change the TV to video-1 to view it. Same thing goes for the DVD player, if that is hooked into Video-2 you will need to switch the TV to Video-2 to view the DVD. (you'll have to figure out what you have plugged into what to get it right)

Another thing, I hope you are aware that the component video outputs (3 plugs colored red, green, and blue) on the RCA unit requires all three plugs to be used at once, and they are to be connected to (3) coresponding component video inputs on the back of the TV set. (from your post, I am worried you tried plugging a single cable into one of the three and tried to feed that to the TV. This will not work)

The single (yellow) composite video out put requires only the one cable to be connected, but is an inferior quality video.

Also, it looks like you can feed the audio from the cable box into the RCA unit using the L/R Aux-Audio Inputs located just to the right of the video outputs. Just connect these to the corresponding audio outputs on the back of the VCR. You will then need to activate the "Aux" input on the RCA unit using the remote control (the "aux" button is located on the right side of the remote with the other inputs......DVD, Tuner, etc.

Hope this helps. good luck
not sure why you have the vcr running straight into the tv....you need to disconnect everything....then start over by connecting your theater receiver into the tv....now run the cable line into the vcr and connect your vcr to the theater via rca cables (red, yellow and white)...test this hook up, make sure u can get a picture...your tv should be set to av, av1, av2, etc and the receiver source should be set to vcr...repeat this step for your dvd player, playstation or whatever else you are connecting.....

ps you still have a vcr????
Don't sweat it. Does the audio change as you change the channels?

What's the closest NJ city to United Palace Theatre?

You didn't provide the address for the UPT, but according to the online research I did (Google), I'm assuming you're referring to the theater at 4140 Broadway (by 175th Street). That would mean that the closest NJ town is Fort Lee, which is where the NJ side of the George Washington Bridge is located.

Downloaded audio/video files dont play with full effect on my 5:1 home theatre..why????

i have LG Karaoke system with a 5:1 home theatre. When i play my downloaded Mp3 or AVI or any other format the effect does not come on all 5 channels...only two plays. Please advice me on a software to convert these files so i can play them on my home theatre in all 5 channels.

Downloaded audio/video files dont play with full effect on my 5:1 home theatre..why????passions soap opera

As schuhaaron has said audio is only recorded in 2 channels. To get the most out of your 5.1 system, you can try connecting the rears to the fronts so you'll have both connections in one connection. Won't make much of a difference but it's something. 5.1 is most useful for dvd's/videos which have the dts/dolby digital symbols etc as the amp can decode the signals and send them to the correct speaker giving you surround sound. It also depends on what connections you are using at the back. If using phono leads then you won't get as crystal clear a sound if you were using optical cables. I use optical and the sound difference is amazing. Hope that helps :)

I have a friend who works for the theatre say that the Dress Circle is the best place to be if you want to have a good view of the stage. She said that most people think that the front row in the orchestra is the best place to be, but really, you have to strain your neck to see, and the other people block your view. Is there a way to become a journalist or Movie/Theatre reviewer without having to go to Universtity?

Is there a way to become a journalist or Movie/Theatre reviewer without having to go to Universtity?imax theater

By now, if this is something you have been interested in doing for a while, you should have been getting involved with the school or college magazine doing reviews for that. If you are only 18, and have just done your A levels, you could take a year out now, and try to get some experience with local newspapers, or your college. Offer to do it for free if you have to, or ask to shadow your local journalist. A degree is only really beneficial if you can show appropriate experience and enthusiasm anyway, so with or without the degree in journalism or English, I would try doing that, or contacting places like The Stage magazine to get some experience. Good luck.

start working for a small local paper, try to get your own column. Gotta work your way up
I am not sure about that. I do not think you need to have to go to a University, but going there might give you a boost. This is one of those Life questions you must answer yourself.
being a movie reviewer is easy. You watch a movie, write about it and put it on the internet. The best way to start is by watching the "AFI Top 100" movies and writing a review of each one. Once you get that under your belt, you have some experience and some online exposure. You're in a good position to go get paid to write reviews. Good luck!

According to the units specs, you can connect up to 2 other devices to it for sound. It should have a digital coax input for digital audio, and it also has a a set of stereo inputs. The fact that is is only a 2.1 system you may not see much of a difference in hooking up the digital coax vs the stereo, but you can definitely use it as the speakers for your TV as well as for movies.

Trying to get service from a reseller is nearly impossible, you'll have to find an "authorized repair" vendor or go directly to the manufacturer.

Usually, the manufacturer will have a website, google the name and see if they have an authorized repair center somewhere near you. Otherwise, you may have to email a general "contact us" department and see whom can repair the unit for you.

Finally, sometimes the manual that comes with the equipment you bought will have numbers to contact if there is a problem. Even if your's came without a book, hopefully you can find a copy on their website and download it to view the information.

Most DVDs will default to Dolby Digital. If you want anything else, you have to select it from the setup menu on the DVD. This is entirely dependent on the way the DVD was programmed, so some may not default to DD, but I have yet to find one that doesn't (unless there is no DD soundtrack at all).
It isn't the DVD player but rather the DVD itself is at fault.

On some DVDs you have to tell it your preference for surround sound.
It's all about compatibility and different formats.
