If your doing a paper on a playwrighter and you have to include their theatre background....?

What would you consider theatre background to be?

What would you be looking for in a section titled theatre background?

If your doing a paper on a playwrighter and you have to include their theatre background....?opera score

I would think that means where they are from, what year they were born, what their upbringing was, where they studied, how they became a playwright, what plays they have written etc. It is a biographical sketch of details about them.

(Please note, it's 'playwright', not 'playwrighter'.)

A playwright's theatrical background is quite simply that--what their training and experience is directly related to the stage. For instance, did they study drama? Do they have experience in acting/directing/production, or other area of performing arts?

What you should be looking for:

*If they studied theatre, where? Did they go to college/university, or apprentice with a theatre company?

*What shows have they done? What plays have they written? Have they directed any of their own work? That of others? Try to find a resume, or chronology of their work.
I have worked with a few playwrights. By theatre background, I would expect it to be:

Have they had any other jobs connected with theatre?

What made them write for theatre?

Which of their plays have been performed?

Where?

One writer I worked with was also a director, one had been a lighting designer and another was (and is) a professional actress. I suspect it is very difficult to sustain a career in writing. I guess most writers have to supplement their carreer with other work. If you are writing for the theatre, then what better place to work and make contacts while you are there?
What plays they wrote, where they studied, did they do anything first such as be an actor, did they start out by doing one-acts, things like that.
